The castle of Angers
50 minutes from our hotel in Cholet, discover the castle of Angers!
Take advantage of your stay at the Best Western Hotel San Benedetto in Cholet to discover the castle of Angers, an impregnable royal fortress.
The castle is located on a rocky ledge above Maine, in a site occupied since prehistoric times due to its historically important strategic position, and is classified as a French national monument.
The visit of the castle of AngersYou enter the castle via a bridge and drawbridge on the east side of the castle. Stroll through the formal gardens to reach the fortified gate that leads to a courtyard surrounded by the most important buildings of the castle dating from the 15th century, including the royal residence and a small chapel.
The courtyard below includes the walls of some of the 10th century buildings that were part of the original fortress in Angers.
It is also here that you can visit the Tapestry of the Apocalypse: one of the most remarkable medieval tapestries in existence and one of the highlights of your visit: the tapestry is 100 metres long and represents the Apocalypse as described in the Bible in the Book of Revelations. The famous tapestry dates from the second half of the 14th century, when it was commissioned by King Louis I.
You can now follow the walk around the castle ramparts. The mill tower, in the north corner, is the only tower to have retained its original height, and once supported a windmill. On the south side of the ramparts you can see the original entrance to the castle with its defence systems and harrow.
Walking along the ramparts, you also have a beautiful view of the roofs of Angers, the flower gardens in the moat, as well as the various gardens of the ramparts, including a vineyard and an herb garden.
